A day after chief minister Mr Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee’s visit, bombs and bullets continue to shatter peace in the trouble-torn villages of Nandigram. Though the chief minister has turned down the demand for redeployment of the CRPF in Nandigram, a series of violent clashes between CPI-M cadres, allegedly \'hired\' from outside the district, and the Bhumi Ucched Pratirodh Committee (BUPC), continued for the fifth consecutive day today that left one woman seriously injured. Violence was reported from Osmanchawk, Jadubarichawk and Garchakraberia areas in Nandigram. A 35-year-old woman Hashina Bibi of Osmanchawk suffered a bullet injury in her left eye and was admitted to the Nandigram block hospital. According to locals, at least 200 rounds were fired and bombs thrown in the violent exchanges between 6 a.m. and 12 noon today. The CPI-M, however, denied the allegations. Tension ran high when BUPC members reacted quickly with gunfire and bomb attacks. No one dared to come out of their homes and many have left their houses for fear of fierce clashes between CPI-M and BUPC workers. In a fresh spate of violence this evening, at least five people belonging to the Trinamul Congress were injured when CPI-M cadres attacked Janka village in Khejuri II block. The CPI-M cadres also ransacked 17 houses and around 200 Trinamul supporters fled their homes. The Trinamul Congress zilla parishad sabhadhipati, Mr Ranjit Mondal, had a close shave. Trinamul Congress leader Sheikh Sufian alleged that the CPI-M has built four bunkers at Jadubarichawk and about 50 to 60 cadres, who have been brought in from outside the district, have taken shelter in them. “Today, they fired at least 200 rounds and injured a woman. Like previous instances, this time, too, CPI-M cadres unleashed terror following the visit of the chief minister”, Mr Sufian said. The SP, Midnapore East, Mr SS Panda, said: “I have received reports of firing and bombing from a few areas in Jadubarichawk and Osmanchawk. If violence continues, I will have to set up a police camp at Osmanchawk.”
